Magnolia Springs State Park
Beautiful Magnolia Springs State Park is known for its crystal clear springs flowing 7 million gallons per day. A boardwalk spans the cool water, allowing visitors to look for alligators, turtles and other wildlife near the springs. A small lake is available for fishing. Overnight guests can choose from cottages and a campground. Magnolia Springs State Park is part of the Muddy Spokes Club, encouraging bikers to finish a 3-mile loop and work toward earning a members-only t-shirt. During the Civil War, this site was called Camp Lawton and served as “the world’s largest prison.” Today, little remains of the prison stockade; however, the earthen breastworks which guarded it may still be seen. During 2010, Georgia Southern University archaeology teams uncovered the stockade wall and numerous personal articles from soldiers. Their discovery has been heralded as one of the most significant finds in recent history. Artifacts are currently on display at the university.

Malcolm McKinnon Airport
McKinnon St. Simons Island Airport Business and vacation travelers can fly straight into the heart of three of the Golden Isles – St. Simons Island, Sea Island, and Little St. Simons Island – by landing at McKinnon St. Simons Island Airport. McKinnon is a busy general aviation facility serving pilots and passengers with the most up-to-date services in the midst of an island beach/golf/nature getaway. The airport has two active runways - 4/22 at 5,800 feet long and 16/34 at 3,313 feet long. Several non-precision approaches provide inclement-weather access, as well as a visual guidance system to assist pilots on landing.

Mallery Park
Mallery Park is located on Mallery Street just north of Pier Village on St. Simons Island. Kings Park, on the east side of Mallery Street, is an extension of Mallery Park. Combined, these parks offer a basketball court, shuffle boards, tennis courts, Butler Fields (three baseball/softball fields), a playground, concession building with restrooms, two grills and many picnic tables. These parks, shaded by mossy oaks, are also host to many antique and craft fairs conveniently located a short walk from Pier Village.

Mallery St Cafe
Mallery Street Café is a great restaurant located in the St Simons Island Village near the Village Inn. Breakfast is available all day and the Eggs Benedict are one of my personal favorites. Their Omelets are also very good. They serve a wide variety of sandwiches but I always order the Hand Cut 5 ounce New York Strip which is excellent. Their Lobster Bisque is very good. They also serve a wide variety of salads. The House Specials on the menu are very creative and my favorite is the Sea Food Crepes. Their serve a variety of side dishes and my favorites there are the sauté spinach and the fried green beans. Right now they close at 2 but I think they are trying to get permission to start serving dinner.

Mangos Grill
Mangos Grill is a great Cuban restaurant that recently opened in Brunswick at 135 Altama Connector across the street from the Wal Mart. Mangos Grill is a place where you can find some of the best dishes from Latin American cuisine including South America, Cuban Sandwiches, Plantains and Burritos. All of their food is made from scratch and is very tasty. I had the Arepas which are two huge hot corn cakes, crispy on the outside and soft in the middle. They are stuffed with ground beef or chicken. My wife had the Hot Dogs which are not your average Hot Dogs. The all beef franks are served in a fresh baked bun, top with their secret relish, mayo, mustard ketchup and a very generous sprinkle of potato sticks. The black beans and rice are some of the best we have ever had. Mangos Grill also serves up a variety of salads, sandwiches, wraps, tacos, quesadillas, burritos and nachos. Mangos Grill is open seven days a week from 11am to 9pm. We look forward to a return visit to Mangos Grill in the near future.

Maritime Center
The Maritime Center makes its home in the Historic Coast Guard Station. Filled with interactive exhibits and galleries, this interesting museum offers an exciting look at coastal Georgia’s natural assets, maritime and military history. Explore seven galleries featuring a variety of hands-on exhibits and activities. The historic U.S. Coast Guard Station at East Beach on St. Simons Island was one of 45 U.S. Coast Guard Stations built around the country by the Works Progress Administration (WPA). Work on the East Beach Station began in Fall 1935. It is believed to be one of only three surviving stations from that era. The station and boathouse had its “First Watch” on April 1, 1937. When the station first opened, the original beachfront was just a few feet from the front door. Today the station is separated from the beach by a large parking lot. On April 8, 1942, a German submarine, U-123, sank two merchant ships, the SS Oklahoma and the Esso Baton Rouge, off the coast of St. Simons Island. Joined by local residents, the coast guardsmen mounted the rescue. In 1995, the East Beach Station was decommissioned and all local Coast Guard operations were moved to mainland Brunswick. A brand new Coast Guard Station was completed in 2005, just to the east of the Sidney Lanier Bridge.

Marshes of Glynn Overlook Park
The Marshes of Glynn Overlook Park is a fine vantage point for viewing some of the vast and beautiful marshlands and river networks that flank Brunswick and much of coastal Georgia. This park offers a fishing pier, picnic tables, and an educational pavilion donated by Georgia Department of Natural Resources. The educational pavilion provides information panels about local history, wildlife and the marsh ecosystem. Enjoy beautiful views overlooking the famous Marshes of Glynn. Pack a picnic lunch or simply stop to snap a picture of the marshlands that inspired the name, Golden Isles. The Lanier Oak is located across the street from the Marshes of Glynn Overlook Park, in the median of U.S. Highway 17. This grass island along the highway is also considered part of the park and has a small pull-over/parking area to visit the Lanier Oak. Under this tree during the 1870's, Georgia poet Sidney Lanier stood and, viewing the landscape, was inspired to write The Marshes of Glynn, considered his finest poetry. NOTE: There are NO restrooms at this park.
